Why Travelpro Europe interrupts its own add-to-cart moment

Why Travelpro Europe interrupts its own add-to-cart moment

Marketplace leakage is a quiet but specific problem for brands that sell both directly and through third-party marketplaces. A shopper researches on the official site, makes up their mind and adds a product to their cart, then, at that exact moment, opens a new tab to see whether it's cheaper on a marketplace. Sometimes it is. Sometimes what they find is grey-market stock, the wrong regional specs or no real warranty, and they only discover that after buying it elsewhere to save a few euros.

Travelpro Europe built a nudge for that moment using Manifest AI, and the timing is the whole point. As soon as a product is added to the cart, before the shopper has a chance to open that other tab, a nudge appears with a plain-language reminder: this is the only official Travelpro Europe store, and buying non-EU stock elsewhere carries real risks around dimensions, airline-fit compliance and warranty coverage.

The nudge offers two buttons. One opens a full explanation in chat covering EU and UK stock and warranty, EU and UK warehouse shipping, free delivery thresholds and a 14-day free-return policy. The other goes straight to the cart, for shoppers who didn't need convincing and simply want to move on to checkout. Neither button forces the shopper to engage with the pitch.

After add-to-cart the nudge offers the case for buying direct, covering EU and UK stock, warranty, shipping, free delivery thresholds and 14-day returns, or a straight path to cart

The same trained response also answers a direct question. If a shopper types something like "why should I order from you?" into the chat at any point, the same explanation comes back, triggered by a question instead of a cart event. That's a deliberate design choice. The brand's case for buying direct is available whenever a shopper asks for it, however they phrase the question.

Add-to-cart is an aggressive moment to interrupt with a message, and it's better to acknowledge that than to present it as a neutral choice. A shopper who has just added something to their cart is close to converting, and an annoying or badly timed interruption could cost the sale. Travelpro's bet is that the risk of losing a sale to a marketplace a few minutes later outweighs the risk of a brief, dismissible nudge right after add-to-cart. The numbers suggest the bet paid off: a 21.74% conversion rate among the 2,179 shoppers nudged after add-to-cart in the last 30 days.

Travelpro weighed the risk of interrupting a shopper near conversion against the risk of losing them to a marketplace tab

That's a strong conversion rate for any bottom-of-funnel touchpoint. It suggests shoppers were reassured by the interruption rather than annoyed by it, at a moment when a little doubt about authenticity or warranty might otherwise have sent them elsewhere.

If your brand sells through both a direct store and third-party marketplaces, this is worth testing at the same moment. Skip the homepage and the footer FAQ. Add-to-cart is where the temptation to check a marketplace price is highest.
