WhatsApp Retargeting and COD-to-Prepaid Conversion: A Playbook for D2C Brands

How D2C brands retarget shoppers on WhatsApp: browse abandonment, anonymous visitor retargeting, Click-to-WhatsApp ad follow-ups and COD confirmation with COD-to-prepaid conversion, with example messages, metrics and a real LEGO India case.

WhatsApp Retargeting and COD-to-Prepaid Conversion: A Playbook for D2C Brands

Short answer: WhatsApp retargeting means messaging opted-in shoppers based on what they did: viewed a product, added to cart, clicked an ad, or chose cash on delivery. The core plays for D2C brands are browse abandonment, cart recovery, Click-to-WhatsApp ad follow-ups and COD-to-prepaid conversion, where a COD buyer confirms the order on WhatsApp and is offered a payment link, often with a small discount. BIK supports all four, including anonymous visitor retargeting through Shopflo and Nitro Commerce, with Meta's rates at cost.

Retargeting on WhatsApp is different from retargeting with ads. You are not buying impressions; you are sending a message to someone who already gave you their number and permission. That makes it cheaper per touch and far more personal, but it also means every message has to be relevant or the customer blocks you. This playbook covers each retargeting play, the COD workflow Indian D2C brands rely on, and what to measure.

What is WhatsApp retargeting?

WhatsApp retargeting is a set of triggered journeys that follow up on a shopper's recent action. The trigger is an event from your store or ads, the message is a WhatsApp template (marketing category in most cases), and the goal is to bring the shopper back to buy.

The four plays, from lowest to highest intent:

PlayTriggerWho you can reachTypical message
Browse abandonmentProduct viewed, collection viewed or search, no add to cartKnown contacts, or visitors identified by an identification appProduct reminder, help offer
Click-to-WhatsApp follow-upShopper messaged you from an ad but did not buyEveryone who started a chat from the adAnswer questions, product picks, checkout in chat
Cart and checkout recoveryAdd to cart or abandoned checkoutKnown contacts and checkout startersCart reminder, then incentive
COD-to-prepaid conversionOrder placed with cash on deliveryEvery COD buyerConfirm order and address, offer prepaid with a discount

Cart recovery has its own guide: WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery. This article focuses on the other three.

Browse abandonment on WhatsApp

Browse abandonment targets shoppers who looked at products but did not add anything to cart. Intent is lower than cart abandonment, so the message should be softer: a reminder, a closer look at the product, or an offer to answer questions.

Which events can trigger it

In BIK, the store events available as journey triggers include Product viewed, Catalog viewed (a collection page), Keyword searched and Add to cart. These need store channel settings enabled. BIK also ships a ready "Product page drop-offs" segment for broadcasts: customers who viewed a product page at least once in the last 30 days but did not order.

How to stop it from becoming spam

Product views fire often. A shopper can view ten products in one visit. BIK's documentation recommends pairing browse triggers with a trigger frequency limit, for example once a day per customer, and a cancel trigger such as Ordered or Abandoned cart created, so a shopper who moves to checkout leaves the browse flow and enters the cart flow instead.

Retargeting anonymous visitors

Most website visitors never log in or type a phone number, so standard browse retargeting misses them. Identification apps close part of that gap.

BIK integrates with Shopflo and Nitro Commerce. According to BIK's documentation, these apps identify shoppers during checkout or pre-checkout and push a tag to Shopify, such as a Shopflo or Nitro lead tag. BIK reads the tag and can trigger journeys on Product View, Add to Cart and Checkout Abandonment events for those shoppers. BIK's Nitro Commerce documentation says identification uses first-party data signals and does not rely on third-party cookies. Tagged shoppers can also be segmented for later campaigns.

Real example: LEGO India. LEGO India uses Shopflo to tag anonymous visitors by the collections they view. A Product Viewed event starts a BIK flow that waits, checks the tag, and sends a WhatsApp message with a Shop Now button. Visitors tagged to an active campaign, such as LEGO Hype Deal or LEGO Collectors Week, get a campaign-specific template instead. The case study reports ₹3.85L in order revenue, 9.2K triggers and 1.6K unique customers in 30 days. It keeps the generic message deliberately plain so it does not feel invasive. Read how LEGO retargets shoppers who never shared their number.

A note on consent: identification does not replace opt-in. Meta requires opt-in before business-initiated WhatsApp messages, so make sure the identification point includes clear WhatsApp consent.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads for ecommerce

Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) ads run on Facebook and Instagram and open a WhatsApp chat with your brand instead of a landing page. They are both an acquisition channel and a retargeting source: every person who starts a chat becomes a contact you can follow up with.

Two reasons they suit ecommerce:

  • Free entry point: Meta keeps conversations started from Click-to-WhatsApp ads free during the free entry point window, so your first replies cost nothing in Meta fees.
  • Questions get answered: shoppers who would bounce from a landing page often ask one question first. A chat flow or AI agent can answer it and close the sale.

How CTWA works in BIK

Based on BIK's help documentation:

  1. Create the CTWA ad in Meta Ads Manager with your WhatsApp number, and set ice-breakers if you want preset first messages.
  2. Connect your ad account in BIK under Acquisitions, CTWA.
  3. Attach chat flows at campaign, ad set, ad or ice-breaker level.
  4. Use the Conversation Started and Customer Acquired events, which carry ad, ad set and campaign IDs, to trigger retargeting journeys for people who chatted but did not buy.
  5. Track impressions, clicks, conversations started, cost per message, conversions and ROAS by campaign, ad set or ad in BIK's CTWA dashboard.

BIK's documentation also flags a known issue: on some iOS devices, a CTWA ad click sends users to the App Store instead of WhatsApp. BIK suggests that brands running ads in India consider targeting Android only until it is resolved.

Example CTWA retargeting sequence

  • In the free window: answer the first question, show 3 to 5 products in a carousel, offer checkout inside WhatsApp.
  • Next day, if no order: a template with the product they asked about and a reason to buy now.
  • After 3 to 5 days: one last message with social proof or a small incentive, then stop.

COD-to-prepaid conversion on WhatsApp

Cash on delivery is still the default payment method for many Indian shoppers. It lowers the barrier to the first order, but COD orders are more likely to be refused at the door, and every refused parcel costs shipping both ways. COD-to-prepaid flows attack both problems: they confirm the order is real before it ships, and they move some buyers to prepaid.

How the BIK COD flow works

BIK's flow library includes COD and address confirmation with COD-to-prepaid conversion. According to BIK's help documentation:

  1. Confirm the order. When a COD order is placed, the customer gets a confirmation message on WhatsApp. If they confirm, BIK adds a tag to the Shopify order.
  2. Confirm or update the address. If nothing has shipped yet, the customer is asked to confirm or update their address. Updates are written back to Shopify.
  3. Offer prepaid. If the order still has not shipped, the customer is offered the option to convert to prepaid and receives a payment link. Razorpay must be connected to BIK.
  4. Record the conversion. After payment, BIK tags the Shopify order and adds a note with the payment and discount amounts.
  5. Handle cancellations. If the customer cancels, BIK cancels the order on Shopify, tags it "cancelled on BIK", asks for a reason and saves it to the order notes.

The prepaid discount is set as a global variable in BIK, and brands can set a maximum discount. If an item has already shipped by the time the customer pays, the flow notes it on the order and tells the customer a refund will follow. For brands on Unicommerce, BIK runs COD confirmation and COD-to-online conversion with order verification on Unicommerce.

One operational caveat from BIK's docs: some shipping aggregators do not sync order changes immediately. Some, such as Shiprocket, can be set to sync only orders with a certain tag, for example orders confirmed on BIK. Check this with your aggregator before launch so unconfirmed COD orders do not ship.

Example COD confirmation messages

Example template (utility): Hi {{1}}, thanks for your order {{2}} of {{3}}, payable on delivery. Please confirm so we can ship it.

Buttons: Confirm order | Cancel order
Example follow-up: Your order is confirmed. Pay online now and save {{4}}, and skip handing over cash at the door.

Button: Pay now

Keep the confirmation message strictly about the order so it stays within utility rules. Put the prepaid offer in a separate step and check its wording against Meta's template guidelines.

Where voice and AI fit

BIK's Voice Agent, which calls shoppers who abandon checkout, has outcomes for "COD order placed" and "payment link requested". A shopper who prefers to pay online can receive the link on WhatsApp right after the call. LEGO India uses a related pattern on its order confirmation: it checks payment status and sends a Complete Payment button to orders with a pending balance, and reports ₹90.6K recovered in 30 days. Read the case study.

Tools for WhatsApp retargeting and COD conversion

Several WhatsApp platforms offer these flows. Zoko, for example, lists COD-to-prepaid as a free essential flow and COD reconfirmation with auto-cancel as a premium flow, as listed in October 2026. The questions worth asking any vendor are: which store events can trigger journeys, whether it writes tags, notes and address changes back to Shopify, whether it works with your checkout app and shipping aggregator, and whether it marks up Meta's rates. Our comparison of the best WhatsApp marketing tools in India goes deeper.

How BIK handles retargeting and COD

  • Store events as triggers: product viewed, collection viewed, keyword searched, add to cart, abandoned cart, ordered, delivered and more, with trigger frequency and cancel triggers.
  • Anonymous visitor identification through Shopflo and Nitro Commerce tags.
  • CTWA management: connect ad accounts, attach flows per ad or ice-breaker, and see ROAS in one dashboard.
  • COD flows: confirmation, address update, COD-to-prepaid with Razorpay and Shopify write-back.
  • Voice Agent and checkout in WhatsApp for the highest-intent shoppers.
  • Cost: plans from $250 per month on unique contacts, plus Meta's WhatsApp rates at cost with no markup. New brands get a growth manager who sets up 30+ flows.

When another option fits better

If you only need COD confirmation and no wider retention programme, a single-purpose COD app covers that job. Smaller brands that want the full set of retargeting and COD flows can start on BIK's startup plan. If your checkout app already runs COD verification well, you may not need a second system doing the same job. And if your buyers are mostly prepaid, as in many non-Indian markets, COD flows add little; focus on browse and cart retargeting instead.

FAQ

How do I convert COD orders to prepaid on WhatsApp?

Send a WhatsApp confirmation when a COD order is placed, then offer a payment link with a small discount before the order ships. In BIK this is a ready flow that needs Shopify and Razorpay connected, and it tags the converted order in Shopify.

What is browse abandonment on WhatsApp?

It is a message sent to a shopper who viewed products but did not add to cart. Use a soft reminder or an offer to help, cap it at once a day, and cancel it if the shopper orders or starts checkout.

Can I retarget website visitors on WhatsApp if they never gave their number?

Not directly. You need an identification tool such as Shopflo or Nitro Commerce that links the visitor to a known, opted-in contact. LEGO India uses Shopflo tags with BIK for this.

Are Click-to-WhatsApp ads good for ecommerce?

They work well for products where shoppers ask questions before buying, and for markets where WhatsApp is the main messaging app. Conversations from these ads are free during Meta's free entry point window.

Is a COD confirmation message marketing or utility?

A plain order confirmation tied to a specific order is a utility message under Meta's guidelines. Adding a promotional offer can make it marketing, so keep the prepaid offer in a separate step.

How often should I send WhatsApp retargeting messages?

No more than one browse message a day per shopper, and two or three messages per retargeting sequence. Meta also limits marketing messages per user based on engagement.
